Tecnologías de Hidrógeno y Pilas de Combustible

History

.

The creation of the European Hydrogen Association, conceived as a grouping of national associations, began and was promoted in the heart of the Executive Hydrogen Committee of the International Energy Agency. The main sponsor was Mr. Abraham Bahbout, a former representative on the aforementioned European Commission committee (who is very fond of travelling in Spain, by the way, and is a great conversationalist in our language). Thus, the Spanish member of this committee, Mr. Antonio González García-Conde, took part in the initial planning, along with alternate member Mr. Rafael Luque Berruezo.

Countries such as France or Germany already have their own associations which form part of the existing European Association.

Representatives of this European Association contacted several people in Spain to promote and speed up the founding of our Association. These contacts were Mr.Jose María Martínez-Val de Peñalosa (UPM-ETSII), with Ms. María Teresa Martínez (CSIC-ICB), and Mr. Antonio González García-Conde (INTA). All of them set this process in motion with significant help from the IDAE.

There was a meeting at the headquarters of the IDAE (Institute  for Diversification and Energy Savings) on 14 March 2002 attended by representatives of: MINECO, MCYT, IDAE, CIEMAT, CSIC-ICB, CSIC-ICP, INTA, ABENGOA, AIR LIQUIDE, ARIEMA, BP, EHN, ELCOGAS, EMPRESARIOS AGRUPADOS, ENDESA, UPM-ETSII, GAS NATURAL, IBERDROLA, IRISBUS and REPSOL.

At this meeting, there was unanimous agreement about the criteria for the procedure to establish the Spanish Hydrogen Association, and to launch the project the Board of Directors was elected and ARIEMA was appointed to the Technical Secretariat.

With the contributions of these people, the next step began, which was to deliberate the By-Laws in order to improve them and develop the Association’s Plan of Action.

Several groups and companies with a lot of interest in this field were not present at the March meeting, and so to meet the challenge of making this a very open Association, a proposal is accepted to make it possible for more entities to become founding members. For this purpose, a new meeting was called for 9 May.

Finally, on 9 May 2002, the Spanish Hydrogen Association is established by means of the General Meeting held at the Gómez Pardo Foundation of Madrid.
